The Kenton County Sheriff’s Office is warning folks of a new scam approach in the area.

In the scam, someone using a number with a fake caller ID will call people and tell them that a subpoena has been sent to them via USPS-certified mail. The scammer uses the name of a sitting county judge to make the scam sound more legitimate, and then asks the person to send them a copy of their signature to compare it to the signature they say is on the certified mail receipt.

Currently, the scammers are using the number (859) 346-0774 with the name Lt. Doug Patton from the Kenton County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office warns not to give or confirm any personal information over the phone. Hang up and call the named agency by a telephone number you look up to confirm a situation.

To report continued nuisance calls, please get in touch with the Kentucky Attorney General, Office of Consumer Protection, at (888) 432-9257.
