The City of Covington voted at last week’s commission meeting to extend its contract with Lexington-based company Integrated Engineering to complete design work for a stormwater detention basin in an area near Pointe Benton Lane and Center Street in Covington’s Peaselburg neighborhood. The vote extended the city’s contract to March 31, 2024.
“This will dramatically reduce the risk of basement backups and flooding in that area by significantly reducing the flow of water that gets directed to the combined sewer system during severe storms,” said Covington’s Public Works Director Keith Bales.
Flood mitigation work in Peaselburg has been in the works for years. This particular project is funded through a combination of city money, funds from Sanitation District 1 and a grant from FEMA. The contract extension will allow Integrated Engineering to complete its design work so the city can send it to the federal government for funding approval.
The contract with Integrated Engineering costs $114,800, but the final cost of the construction as a whole is unknown at this time.
