More than 300 bags of candy and Christmas cards were assembled at the Southgate fire station and delivered to the Campbell County Detention Center Thursday night.
The event was arranged by members of Catholic Charities, an organization that assembles various programs in Norther Kentucky such as child and family services, counseling services, housing services, and community outreach services, like the jail ministry that organized Thursday’s event. The event had over 15 volunteers in attendance who crafted the gifts.Â
Mark Messmer, a member of the jail ministry program, mentioned his gratitude to those who volunteered.
“It is encouraging to see the community coming together to support not only the inmates but also the Corrections Staff by recognizing the importance of extending appreciation to those who work in challenging environments,” Messmer said.
Highland Heights Mayor Greg Meyers was among the many volunteers who helped create the gift bags.
“What the group of volunteers did last evening packing all those goodie bags is what Christmas is all about—the spirit of giving back to a group of people. If this small gift changes the life of just one person then it was all worth it,” Meyers said.
