Remind friends and family this holiday season that real-life “Scrooge” scammers want money, and they don’t care how or who they hurt to get it.
Law enforcement will not call by phone about unpaid fines, missed jury duty, or outstanding warrants, said the Kenton County Sheriff’s Office.
Scammers will try to get your holiday money by pushy verbal scare tactics. Using tricks like displaying a real number associated with a law enforcement agency or using a real agency name, scammers will bully and pressure people to collect alleged fines or fees over the phone.
If a caller says that you can “take care of a legal matter” or “missed jury service” by gift card or even bitcoin over the phone, it is a sure mark the caller is attempting to scam, said the department.
Always take the time to reach out directly to agencies by the contact number you research. Do not redial or use numbers provided by the possible scammer.
Contact the Kentucky Attorney General, Office of Consumer Protection at (888) 432-9257 to report attempts by scammers.
