Various vehicle documentation services will be unavailable to the public state-wide beginning Jan. 1 for seven to 10 days, according to a recent announcement from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

The temporary stoppage will allow the state’s county clerks’ offices to migrate their records to a new electronic records-keeping system. As such, both state and local officials have advised people to take care of any needed documentation updates before the close of the year.

“If you normally renew your tags in December, please consider renewing online or coming to the office by December 28, 2023,” said Kenton County Clerk Gabe Summe. “Also, 2024 car taxes don’t get uploaded till January 1, 2024, so these taxes can’t be paid in advance.”

She added that anyone who needs to transfer a car title, pay a delinquency or request a handicap permit for their vehicles should come into the county office before Dec. 28.

The following services will not be available during the transfer:

  • Vehicle and boat registration renewals
  • Vehicle and boat titling and transfers
  • Disabled parking permit issuance
  • License plate issuance

County offices may also have limited hours over the holiday season, so residents should consider this. Services are expected to gradually return beginning on Jan. 8, according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
