On the heels of Kentucky School Report Card data being released, Walton-Verona Independent Schools is now assessing how to improve its results.

The district’s high school and middle school received a green rating, while the elementary school received a Yellow rating via the Kentucky Department of Education’s color-coded system based on achievement level.

“We’re working very directly with our co-op to identify areas of strength and growth,” Walton-Verona Middle School Principal Eric Morwessel said during Thursday’s regular school board meeting. “We have a process in place for supplemental resources and our co-teaching, but we’ve asked the co-op to come in and kind of look at what we’re doing – tell us the good and the bad. We met with them last week and they don’t have a design process. They’re creating a process for us.”

It is anticipated cooperative personnel will be on-site at the end of January to assist in evaluating how to bolster various academic sectors, officials said.

“What we’re looking for is for them to tell us where we’re doing things well, but also look at places where we can refine what we’re doing,” Morwessel said. “There was a fifth grade short answer in reading that 85% of our kids did not get right. When our teachers looked at that on our planning day a couple of weeks ago, we asked them to try and diagnose where the problem was with that particular question. ”

The school district said they are determining what approaches to take regarding academic growth steps and what resources are needed to attain the desired goal.

“We asked questions about where they (teachers) want to grow and what we have to do, what services and systems do we have to put in place for our kids in different learning categories,” Walton-Verona High School Principal Adam Nash said. “Making sure that we are teaching standards, giving aligned lessons to the standards and making sure we’re properly assessing the standards.”
