A Burlington-based firm will handle Boone County’s traffic signal maintenance and inspection responsibilities for another year.

County-owned traffic signals, school zone flashers and traffic light poles will serviced by Bluegrass Electrical Consultants in the wake of the Boone County Fiscal Court approving an extension of the present contractual agreement.

“In 2019, the fiscal court approved a contract with Bluegrass Electric to perform the bi-annual inspections and preventative maintenance on roadway signal systems owned or maintained by the county,” Boone County Assistant County Administrator/County Engineer Rob Franxman said. “The original contract indicated a two-year term and that term has been extended for an additional two years at this point.”

The contract provides for labor and equipment costs to perform emergency repairs. This is the final allowable contract extension with Bluegrass Electric Consultants and the role will be re-advertised next year.

“Bluegrass Electric has performed satisfactorily over all four years and the Public Works Department is recommending to renew the contract for an additional year, as permitted by the original bidding documents,” Franxman said.

The firm specializes in commercial electrical projects, according to the Bluegrass Electrical Consultants website.

“We keep them busy because this crosswalk pole right here keeps getting knocked down,” Boone County Judge/Executive Gary W. Moore said regarding an area near the Boone County administrative office building site in Burlington. “They had just fixed that a few days before a truck took it to the ground. They’re electrical contractors with boom trucks – they come in quite handy when we need them.”
