The Florence City Council has established an advisory panel to provide input regarding veterans programs and related activities.
Council member David Osborne initiated the Florence Veterans Commission concept, officials said during Tuesday’s special council meeting session.
“Mr. Osborne served in the Army, very proud of his service and his community,” Florence Mayor Julie Aubuchon said – adding Osborne was absent from the session due to illness. “He felt there was more we could do for our veterans.”
The commission, acting as an advisory body to the mayor, will also be a veterans resource, assisting in connecting veterans with services and support.
“It was decided a veterans commission would be a great way to show the Northern Kentucky community that Florence is a welcoming place for veterans and we encourage them to work here, live here and get involved in our community,” Aubuchon said.
Florence Infrastructure Support Services Superintendent Greg Clift will fill the commission’s staff liaison role, and several local veterans have expressed interest in serving on the panel.
“As the mother of a child that is serving in the Army now, I really think this program will be great,” Council member Lesley Chambers said. “And I think once he comes, hopefully, home to Florence, being involved in this commission would be a great way to allow him to remember his service.”
Council member Mel Carroll also hailed the initiative.
“I support it wholeheartedly,” Carroll said. “I think we’re moving in the right direction. I don’t think we do nearly enough for our veterans, so I’m happy to speak in favor of it.”
The city employs veterans staffing positions within the police, fire, public services and administration sectors, Aubuchon said.
“These veterans serve our city and serve our citizens,” Aubuchon said. “My dad being a veteran and my two brothers being veterans – veteran causes are very near and dear to my heart.”
