Kristina Yelton, a 67-year-old woman from Aurora, Indiana, died after sustaining injuries in a traffic accident that occurred early in the afternoon on Monday while traveling westbound on I-275, according to information from the Boone County Sheriff’s Office. Randy Yelton, a 70-year-old man traveling with Kristina Yelton, sustained life-threatening injuries before being moved to UC Medical Center in Cincinnati.
The accident occurred early in the afternoon, and sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene around 2 p.m. Justin Cole, a 35-year-old man from Hebron, struck the car carrying the Yeltons, which had slowed down with the rest of traffic due to a different collision that occurred earlier in the day. From there, the Yeltons’ car struck a UPS van directly in front of them, driven by Ryan Weinle of Moores Hill, Indiana. Both Cole’s vehicle and the Yeltons’ vehicle then crashed into the guard rail.
Weinle and Cole escaped the accident without injuries, but Kristina Yelton was transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Edgewood, where she later died. Randy Yelton was separately moved to UC Medical Center for treatment. The sheriff’s announcement did not divulge why the Yeltons were moved to separate facilities.
The highway reopened around 4:30 p.m. No criminal charges have been filed. The sheriff’s department stated that inattention likely played a role in the accident, but investigation is ongoing.
