Union city officials said they are considering applying funds originally targeted for a project to address drainage and water issues to other endeavors.

The Whispering Trails Storm Water project, a collaboration with Sanitation District No. 1, was taken off the table because of a roadblock, officials said.

“The deadline of Aug. 1 has passed and we did not receive that last signature on the easement that we needed to move forward with the cost share project with SD1,” Union City Administrator Amy Safran said.

The work was slated to target the 1800 block of Whispering Trails and included a new storm sewer while using American Rescue Plan Act funds to help pay for the project, according to City of Union Commission meeting minutes.

A list of proposed projects includes installing new catch basins in certain neighborhoods to drain excess water; adding a cemetery gazebo; purchasing wayfinding signage for the old Union Business District; acquiring a Public Works Department truck; and obtaining equipment to address speeding in certain sections of the city.

“We get many requests from residents asking for speed bumps, signs,” Safran said about traffic calming possibilities. “Having maybe something that’s portable that we can use.”

As a means of deterring increased speeds, Union Public Works Director Paul Kremer introduced the idea of purchasing and installing signage initially on Burleigh Lane.

“The slow sign, if we go out and buy it now, would be $5,000,” Kremer said. “To hopefully mitigate the speeding that goes on to that off Mt. Zion. The speed limit signs are pricey, but I like these because they have a little message on it.”

Further discussion regarding alternate project prioritization is expected to take place at the Aug. 21 commission meeting at 6 p.m.
