Fort Thomas Police Chief Casey Kilgore invited anyone interested to apply for an upcoming Fort Thomas Citizens Police Academy during July’s city council meeting.

The academy aims to promote connection and communication between community members and the police department, said Sergeant Derek Faught in a promotional video for the program.

“We want to cultivate positive, meaningful connections with our citizens,” Faught said.

Curriculum includes an overview of the Fort Thomas Police Department as well as broader topics such as “policing in America,” “emerging issues in law enforcement” and “constitutional law and the legal system.”

The course will cover traffic enforcement, the role of school resource officers, use of force, criminal investigations, firearms, K9 and SWAT demonstrations. The program will include panel discussions, a courthouse tour, guest speakers and more.

The 10-week program is set for Sept. 14 through Nov. 18. Class sessions will be held Thursday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. with optional experiences on Saturday mornings from 9 to 11 a.m.

Community members at least 18 years old and with no felony charges are invited to apply for the academy by Aug. 18.

The application is available on the city website and should be returned to Lieutenant Nathan Day via email, fax or in person. His contact info is nday@ftthomas.org or 859-572-1240.
