Thomas Logan’s passion for the public works vocation began with his participation in a Harlan, Kentucky, weatherization program at 18.

“I could see the immediate rewards I was giving to those people, but to also the community I lived in,” Logan, Boone County’s new director of Public Works, said. “To be able to come to this community and make a difference is an honor and privilege.”

The Boone County Public Works Department provides essential services in the areas of street and storm sewer maintenance, code enforcement, county fleet management, assurance of safe development and management of public spaces.

The Boone County Fiscal Court appointed Logan to his post during its July 11 session – with the University of Kentucky graduate and licensed professional engineer surfacing as the selection amid a pool of more than 20 applicants.

Boone County advertised the Director of Public Works position in early June and narrowed the list of candidates to five – with three being internal and two external, Assistant County Administrator/County Engineer Robert Franxman said.

“During the review and the interview process, it really became obvious that Tom’s skills would be an excellent fit at the Department of Public Works and Boone County as a whole,” Franxman said. “Tom is going to help continue the evolution and advancement of the Department of Public Works.”

Logan is a Boone County resident; served as the City of Covington’s City Engineer for nearly 10 years; spearheaded a fleet parts procurement method Boone County presently models; and most recently spent about eight years at Toyota managing large-scale projects to expand plants and campuses, Franxman said.

“We did a lot of great things in Covington,” Logan said. “The one thing I saw in this particular job, that I didn’t have in Covington, is I live in this community. To be able to come to this community and make a difference is an honor and privilege.”

Innovation and continually seeking ways to improve resource sustainability are key, Logan said.

“We can’t wait to work with you to continue to move this community forward,” Boone County Judge/Executive Gary W. Moore said.
