Thomas More University will grant two honorary degrees at its commencement ceremony on May 13 at 10:30 a.m. at the college’s stadium in Florence, according to a press release from the university.
The first degree will be granted to Robert W. Plaster, who died in 2008 and will receive a posthumous Doctor of Business Administration. Plaster founded the New York state-based Empire Gas Corporation and the Robert W. Plaster Foundation, which has gifted several educational institutions, including Thomas More. The university’s College of Business bears his name.
The second degree will be granted to Robert A. Bilott, who will receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree. Bilott has worked as a guest lecturer at Thomas More and litigated a well-known case against DuPont, which had a production facility in West Virginia whose run-off chemicals had contaminated nearby farmland. He published a book about his experience, titled Exposure, in 2019.
