Newport has proclaimed April 2023 as Fair Housing Month.

The proclamation, read at their regular meeting on Feb. 27, said that fair housing groups in the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development over the years have received thousands of complaints of alleged illegal housing discrimination and found many that improved upon investigation to be violations of the Fair Housing laws.

According to the proclamation, the United States Congress passed the Civil Rights Act of 1968, which declared that the law of the land would guarantee the rights of equal housing opportunity.

“The city of Newport, Kentucky is committed to the mission and intent of congress to provide fair and equitable housing opportunities for all,” Newport Mayor Tom Guidugli Jr. read from the proclamation.
