It’s been just over a month since the most recent act of vandalism rocked the Greater Cincinnati disc golf community.

In October of last year, the city of Covington officially opened its highly anticipated disc golf course to the public. The course featured 18 holes spread across 700 acres of Covington hilltop that overlooks the Cincinnati skyline.

Just three days after opening, vandals destroyed 12 out of the 18 disc golf baskets. Then in early January of this year, vandals damaged 14 out the 18 baskets beyond repair.

The disc golf community was in shock. During the first act of vandalism, $5,000 to $6,000 worth of damage was caused, according to Covington Communications Director Dan Hassert. The second act of vandalism caused $7,000 worth of damage.

“It was unprecedented,” said Dr. Ryan Freibert, president of the Greater Cincinnati Disc Golf Association.

In response, the Greater Cincinnati Disc Golf Association is hosting a tournament to raise money for new baskets. Scheduled for Sunday, March 12, from 8 a.m. to 4:20 p.m., the tournament will be played using temporary baskets set up on the regular Devou Park Golf Course.

The tournament costs $10 to enter. There’s a $20 optional buy-in with a 100% payout to the top 50% of field.

The Greater Cincinnati disc golf community responded by already filling the 164 spots available for the tournament.

Besides the tournament, there will be skill games such as ace pot and long drive. Food and drinks will be served at the clubhouse.

“We’re excited for this event,” said Freibert. “The tournament will help bring the disc golf community together and raise money for the course.”
