Following its new theme of Moving Forward Together, the Newport Independent School District and the Westside Citizens Coalition are hosting a community cookout this Saturday.
The cookout is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Bernadette Watkins Park at the corner of 6th and Patterson streets. Members of the community are invited to attend and learn more information about Newport schools and the Westside Citizens Coalition.
“With a new school year coming up on Aug. 29th, this is a great chance to get out and mingle with members of the community and establish a partnership with one of our great community groups,” said Newport Independent School District Superintendent Tony Watts. “We plan to continue working on developing partnerships with the community throughout the upcoming school year.”
Charles Williams, vice president of the Westside Citizens Coalition, said he is looking forward to Saturday’s picnic.
“I have grandchildren that have been through Newport schools, so I know they do a great job educating our kids,” Williams said. “Bringing our two organizations together is an excellent way for people to learn more about the schools and the Westside Citizens Coalition. And who doesn’t love a great barbecue?”
Newport Board of Education Chairwoman Ramona Malone said the picnic is a great way for Newport citizens to build bonds between one another.
“I always say, it takes a village,” said Newport Board of Education Chairwoman Ramona Malone. “So as we move forward together, Saturday’s picnic is a great way to continue the effort of establishing and building relationships across the city and to show the community the vision of what our schools can become by working together.”
