Clouds hang over the sign for First Financial Drive and State Road 18, where a road projects has been complicated by an increase in traffic.

An additional $27,520 is going toward a road project at First Financial Drive in Boone County, which is due to be completed in late June.

Director of Public Works Rob Franxman said all of the underground work is complete but the crew has encountered some “soft, subgrade materials throughout a portion of the roadbed.”

The county is required to excavate it and replace it with more stable material. The completion date will be extended by 15 working days, Franxman said. He said the original budget for this project was approximately $364,000, and the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) is providing $250,000 of that.

This is the first change order required for the project. The new completion date will be June 22. The change order passed 3-0, with Commissioner Jesse Brewer absent from the meeting.

The work at First Financial Drive has drawn the ire of some residents trying to access the bank, doctor’s office, and a license branch location in the area. Boone County Judge/Executive Gary Moore said in March that the increased traffic to the Burlington license branch was impeding the road project.

The road work highlighted additional needs for the Kentucky license branch location, which was to be a regional branch location used by Boone County residents and surrounding county drivers until KYTC opened a second branch in Covington.
