Clouds hang over the sign for First Financial Drive and State Road 18, where a road projects has been complicated by an increase in traffic.

The relocation of a clerk’s office, where licenses are made, is bringing too much traffic to a road project currently underway at First Financial Drive in Burlington.

Judge/Executive Gary Moore said a local project to connect First Financial Drive is being impeded by a “huge bounce” in traffic due to the relocation of the Grant County Circuit Clerk’s office. Moore said the office “began to transfer and closed and integrated into this facility” on First Financial Drive, “and that added a substantial amount of traffic.”

That traffic is impacting access to businesses in the area for customers and employees. Located at Beil Road and First Financial are Forcht Bank and a St. Elizabeth’s Physicians office.

First Financial Drive is located directly off State Road 18 in Burlington. Moore said it’s “imperative” that the project is completed quickly to eliminate congestion in the area.

Boone County officials contacted the Kentucky Department of Transportation to inform them that the new location isn’t working.

“It’s not the right place for this facility. The county did not choose it. We had concerns when we heard that that was the site that was chosen,” Moore said during the Fiscal Court meeting Tuesday night. “We voiced those concerns back then and the state moved forward.”

Moore said the county has received a response from the state, saying they are reevaluating the site and their decision. It was mentioned that KDOT may establish more regional offices in the future. For now, residents accessing the road will have to cope with the construction.
