The ramp from Pike Street to northbound Interstate 71/75 will close for about six months starting Monday evening (provided)

Two interstate ramps in Covington scheduled to close Monday night for roughly six months will remain open after all, at least for now.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet announced a change of plans on Monday afternoon, just hours before the closures were set to begin.

The planned closures are part of an $8.8 million project designed to alleviate traffic congestion at the Brent Spence Bridge, which connects Covington to Cincinnati via Interstate 71 and 75. The so-called “Texas Turnaround” being installed will funnel traffic seeking to enter the northbound highway at the bridge further south, limiting the Fourth Street entrance ramp to emergency vehicles only.

Other drivers looking to go north would be pushed southward in a loop that would then access the interstate at Pike Street.

The Fourth Street entrance ramp and the Fifth Street exit ramps were slated to close on Monday night as part of the project.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet – District 6 Office said that an updated schedule would be release this week, but that the ramps would remain open “until further notice”.
