A downtown Covington landmark was damaged Friday evening and now a juvenile faces charges, police said.
The street clock owned by Motch Jewelers, the oldest business in the city, saw its north-facing side vandalized. A crew from the Covington public works department was spotted cleaning the broken glass and placing plastic over the exposed clock on Monday afternoon.
Covington Assistant Police Chief Brian Valenti told LINK nky on Monday that the clock was damaged “by a juvenile early Friday evening.”
“The juvenile used a stolen flagpole to damage the clock,” Valenti said. “After running from police, the juvenile was caught and was charged with criminal mischief and possession of stolen property property.”
Motch Jewelers was closed Monday, as is typical of the business. It is open Tuesday through Saturday.
Further details of the vandalism were not immediately available.
The famed jewelry store opened in Covington in 1857 and moved to its current location at the corner of Madison Avenue and Pike Street in 1871.
The street clock was installed on Madison Avenue to mark the new location 150 years ago by Boston-based E. Howard & Co.
