Jim Hamberg said he is seeking reelection as Southgate mayor to continue work on public safety, infrastructure, development and reducing the city’s property tax rate.

Hamberg has served as mayor since 2007. He pointed to the construction of a new firehouse, reestablishment of the Southgate Police Department in 2012 and securing outside funding for street, sidewalk and infrastructure projects among his accomplishments in office.

Hamberg faces Mark Messmer in the Nov. 3 general election.

“The last line of the Jaycee Creed says, ‘…service to humanity is the best work of life,’” Hamberg said. “That principle has guided me throughout my years of public service.”

Hamberg said recent development has expanded Southgate’s tax base, including projects at Memorial Pointe and the former Sunrock property. He said code enforcement, updated property valuations and new development contributed to the city reducing its property tax rate from $5.29 per $1,000 in 2025 to $4.45 in 2026.

If reelected, Hamberg said his first priority would be meeting with the newly elected city council, encouraging members to complete Kentucky League of Cities training and updating them on ongoing city business.

Hamberg said his other priorities include maintaining public safety, investing in streets and infrastructure, encouraging development along U.S. 27 and continuing efforts to reduce the property tax rate.

He also wants to pursue pedestrian and traffic improvements along U.S. 27, expand activities at the Southgate Community Center and continue establishing the Southgate Business Association and supporting the Read Ready early literacy program.

Hamberg said he would also like to hold a council meeting and public forum at the community center to increase residents’ access to city government.
