A city-owned splash pad slated for construction in Memorial Park in Independence cleared a public facility review with the Kenton County Planning Commission this week.
Public building projects, such as those connected to cities, public safety agencies and schools, are not subject to zoning regulations like private enterprises. However, public entities will often ask for a public facilities review to keep county officials informed and see if the project conforms with county comprehensive planning.
The plans presented to the planning commission call for a 2,137-square-foot pad with a 1,038-square-foot concrete apron inside the park. An above-ground circulation system would be responsible for water control. The professionals with Kenton County Planning and Development Services recommended approval of the splash pad.

The city hopes to have the splash pad open in the first half of next year.
There was little discussion of the splash pad plans at the meeting on Thursday.
