Maria Hehman has been a food writer with LINK from basically the beginning.
At first, she wrote feature stories like who were the best dressed coaches left in the NCAA tournament that year and places to go for a summer cocktail on a patio.
And then, we came up with a great idea: What if, every week, Maria goes to a different street in NKY and tells us about some of the cool book shops, coffee shops, bars and restaurants on that street?
That’s when Streetscapes was born.
The first edition of Streetscapes was published online on June 17, 2022. Maria checked out some of the pizza places and coffee shops along Monmouth in Newport.
Since then, she’s gone just about everywhere in Northern Kentucky — she’s even visited some streets more than once because of how much they’d changed since the last time she was there. She’s gone from Main Street in Covington to Fort Thomas Avenue to Washington Street in Burlington to Elm Street in Ludlow.
Streetscapes is one of the features our readers tell us they have enjoyed the most over the years. It has given them a glance and some of the cool things available in cities they may not regularly go to, but now they have a reason to check them out.
After three years, Maria has decided to hang up her Streetscapes hat (apron?) because she’s now a manager at her full-time job and just doesn’t have time to go tromping around NKY for us (which we understand, though we’re really sad to see her go!).
We want to give a huge thanks to Maria and wish her well in her future endeavors.
So that leads me to a position for a food writer that we just posted this morning. This is a part-time, contract position, so you’ll be able to do it in addition to your full-time job.
What are we looking for?
We’re looking for someone who loves food, loves NKY, and can write well about restaurants, bars, creamy whips, and probably chili. If you have an idea for a regular feature (think Streetscapes, but different), even better.
We don’t just want someone to take over Streetscapes. I think we’ve hit most streets at least once, so we think it’s time to move onto a new idea.
This is also not a restaurant reviewer position, so don’t worry about trying to go incognito when you’re working on stories for us.
You’ll be writing about one story per week, though if you want to do more, you can pitch ideas and we’ll approve them on a case-by-case basis.
We’re looking forward to chatting with you!
