Ty Kramer went from collecting Pokémon cards at five years old to now competing in the Pokémon World Championships.
Kramer, a junior at Villa Madonna High School in Villa Hills, was first invited to attend the world championships, held in Washington D.C., as a competitor in 2018. He was then invited to three more world championships in London, Yokohama, Japan and Honolulu.
Invitations are distributed to players who have earned specific points at the local, regional, and international levels.
At this year’s world championships, held in Honolulu from Aug. 16 to 18, Kramer placed 27th overall, finishing with seven wins and three losses.
“I’m pleased with how my hard work has paid off this year,” Kramer said in a press release. “It’s an amazing achievement. The feeling is a mixture of happiness and pure exhaustion.”
Kramer won a $5,000 scholarship and other prizes, according to the release.
