An extension to the fiber bill, allowing Wi-Fi access to every door in Campbell County, is now expanding to the county parks.
As part of a deal with AltaFiber, Campbell County received a credit for a public Wi-Fi project. The project includes Wi-Fi access at AJ Jolly Park, campground, festival area, and golf course in Alexandria, as well as Pendery Park in Melbourne.
“It’s a five-year agreement with AltaFiber that includes all the equipment, all the installation, then also operating that network for five years,” Campbell County Administrator Matt Elberfeld said. “They’re responsible if there’s an equipment malfunction. If coverage goes down, the agreement states, they’re responsible for bringing that back up. Basically, entering into a contract for service, and it is up to AltaFiber to make sure we have service.”
Elberfeld said there will still be areas in AJ Jolly Park where coverage will be insignificant due to the geography and topography of the site. Still, the main visited areas will have strong coverage.
Crews from AltaFiber will work during the winter to install the service so that come spring, park users can enjoy the Wi-Fi.
There will be a user license agreement to access the Wi-Fi for security purposes. The Wi-Fi will have content filters and the infrastructure on AltaFiber’s end to protect users.
