Falcon Theatre opens its 2022-23 season with the regional premiere of “The Half-Life of Marie Curie,” a new play about scientist Marie Curie, engineer Hertha Ayrton, and their friendship that helped them overcome personal backlash to pursue their ambitions.
In 1911, Marie Curie won the Nobel Prize in chemistry for discovering the elements radium and polonium. By 1912, she was the object of gossip over an alleged affair with the married Frenchman Paul Langevin, erasing her achievements from public memory.
In the play, after Curie feels demoralized by the press labeling her as a “foreign” Jewish temptress and a homewrecking traitor, she agrees to join her friend and colleague Hertha Ayrton, an electromechanical engineer and suffragette.
“The Half-Life of Marie Curie,” according to a news release, reveals the power of female friendship as it explores the relationship between these women, mothers, widows, and champions of scientific inquiry.
This two-woman play features Tara Williams (Marie Curie) and Tracy M. Schoster (Hertha Ayrton) and is directed by Ted J. Weil.
Performances are on September 23, 24, 29, 30, and October 1, 6, 7, and 8 at 8 p.m. Ticket prices are $28 for adults and $15 for students with valid ID.
