The Covington branch of the Kenton County Public Library is hosting a traveling exhibit starting Sept. 10 called Telling A People’s Story: African American Children’s Illustrated Literature.

The exhibit, according to the library, “offers a lens into the cultural, historical, and social makeup of African American cultural identity while also shedding light on the long-neglected world of African American authors and illustrations in the pantheon of children’s literature.”

The library is kicking off the event with a celebration Saturday, Sept. 10 with a full day of events that features author Shadra Strickland, who is presenting a family friendly reading and art demonstration at 10:30 a.m.

Also Sept. 10, emerging local artist Tamia A. Saunders will discuss her work through colorful illustration at 1:30 p.m.

“Until the 1960s, and mostly the 1970s, African American children rarely saw
themselves depicted in children’s books from the perspective of African American authors and illustrators,” the library said in a release. “Telling A People’s Story is a celebration of the power of illustrated children’s books that showcases their story.”
