Dr. Peter Jernigan recently joined the general surgery team at St. Elizabeth, bringing a passion for hands-on care and a commitment to helping patients heal. With expertise in robotic and minimally invasive techniques, Dr. Jernigan is focused on delivering personalized, high-quality care to the Northern Kentucky community.
What inspired you to pursue general surgery?
Dr. Jernigan: I was drawn to surgery during my clinical rotations in medical school. It was the last rotation of the year, and I immediately fell in love with it. I enjoy working with my hands, solving problems in real time, and seeing patients improve quickly after procedures. My passion for surgery is rooted in my desire to help people heal. Whether treating appendicitis, gallbladder disease or hernias, I find fulfillment in seeing patients recover and regain their health.
How do you approach personalized care?
Dr. Jernigan: I take time to understand what’s going on in a patient’s life—not just their symptoms—so we can create a care plan that fits their needs and goals. My team and I tailor each treatment to the individual, ensuring patients feel heard, supported and empowered throughout their surgical journey.
What role does robotic surgery play in your practice?
Dr. Jernigan: Robotic surgery allows us to push the boundaries of what’s possible with minimally invasive techniques. It helps patients recover faster, with less pain and fewer complications. St. Elizabeth has invested in robotic platforms across its campuses, making this advanced technology more accessible to patients and surgeons alike. I’m excited to be part of a system that prioritizes innovation and quality care.
What types of procedures do general surgeons perform?
Dr. Jernigan: General surgeons treat a wide range of conditions, often involving the abdomen, skin and soft tissue. Common procedures include gallbladder removal, appendectomy, hernia repair, treatment of intestinal issues, and removal of cysts or masses. I also specialize in foregut surgery, including anti-reflux procedures, using minimally invasive and robotic techniques.
When is surgery the best option?
Dr. Jernigan: Surgery is often the best path forward when an illness is interfering with your quality of life. We work with patients to weigh their options and make informed decisions. For conditions like hernias, early intervention can prevent complications and reduce the need for future surgeries. Most hernias get worse over time. Fixing them early can lead to better outcomes and a smoother recovery.
What can patients expect during recovery?
Dr. Jernigan: Recovery varies depending on the procedure and the patient’s overall health. My team and I support patients every step of the way—from hospital care to follow-up appointments and rehabilitation services. We’re here to make sure you’re not just healed, but truly back to living your life.
What advice do you have for patients hesitant about elective surgery?
Dr. Jernigan: Surgery is temporary. The discomfort doesn’t last forever. If your condition is holding you back, it’s worth considering how surgery could help you reclaim your life. We encourage patients to ask questions and share their concerns. We’re here to guide you, not pressure you. Your goals matter.
