A new, $8 million shelter for women and children is going up in Covington at the corner of 18th and Greenup streets as Welcome House celebrates its 40th anniversary.

The 20,000-square-foot shelter will also have a center for programs and services, which will double the organization’s ability to capacity to serve people experiencing homelessness.

“It’s pretty amazing to think that 40 years ago we started with a staff of one and today we have grown to a staff of over 50,  over 600 volunteers, and services expanding to the southern-most part of the state,” said CEO Danielle Amrine. “Our  continual growth not only shows the need for these services, but also the unwavering support from the community that  we are fully capable of helping those experiencing homelessness.”

Welcome House started as a coalition of Covington churches in 1982 when Fr. William Henry Mertes from Mother of God church noticed an uptick of women and children experiencing homelessness throughout the city. Mertes and other local churches started a shelter for women and children on the corner of Russel and Pike streets.

Forty years later, Welcome House has served more than 90,000 local men, women and children experiencing homelessness.
