We asked Jeff a little about how the health insurance market was
shaping up in 2014 with all of the recent changes.  Here’s what he said …

·       There have definitely
been a lot of changes as a result of the Affordable
Care Act
.  Those changes will not
affect everyone in the same way.  If you
have coverage from your job, you may see some plan changes.  However, if you buy coverage on your own,
there’s a big chance you will need to deal with major changes in 2014 if you
haven’t already.  I can help you evaluate
your options if you are interested in buying insurance on your own.  Even if you have already enrolled, I can take
a look at your plan and we can make changes if necessary.

·       New laws = confusion.  If you buy your own health insurance in 2014,
you need to verify your doctors are in-network and your drugs are on the
“covered” list.  Doctor networks have
been narrowed to bring down premium prices.
Some of the new plans limit your ability to cross State boarders.  For example, if you live here in NKY, some
plans limit your ability to visit an Ohio provider, like Christ or Children’s Hospital.  It seems silly not to check, but many people
do not verify this before they buy a policy.

·       Advanced Tax Credits (or subsidies) …
depending on your income, you might qualify for an advanced tax credit to help
reduce the cost of your monthly health insurance premium.  You cannot get a tax credit if you are
offered employer based coverage.  I can
help determine your eligibility for an advanced tax credit and explain how the
process works.

·
Guaranteed
issue:
Beginning in 2014, health insurance companies cannot deny
health insurance coverage to an individual based on a pre-existing condition.
The cost of health insurance premiums cannot vary based on health status for
children or adults. Premiums may only vary based on age, geography, family size
and tobacco use. The law also restricts how much premiums can vary based on age.

·       Go uninsured?
Pay a fine.
In 2014, the penalty is $95 per uninsured adult (the penalty
for uninsured children is always half the adult amount, but in 2014 there’s a
$325 cap for a family) or 1 percent of taxable household income, whichever is
greater. There are some exceptions though for hardship or religious reasons.  Fines will increase in coming years.

Further, Jeff adds that using an experienced agent is a better option
than navigating all of these changes on your own.  Agents are compensated by the insurance
company and won’t cost you anything extra.
Jeff can help service your account all year long and assist with any
questions or problems that come your way.
He is an independent agent, so he has no allegiance to a certain
insurance company and can review all of your options.
