Institutions involved with the acquisition of the old Duro Bag manufacturing site in Covington announced Monday they were beginning to meet with private developers to serve as partners for the site’s redevelopment.
Identifying a private developer to help shape what the site will become in the future is the latest step in the site’s redevelopment journey.
“As we seek to transform this site into something vibrant that builds on the momentum we are seeing throughout our city, we must continue to engage the community to ensure the vision aligns with Covington’s values,” Mayor Ron Washington said. “I look forward to continuing to see this unique opportunity develop into something that our community can be proud of.”
The partner institutions on the project include the City of Covington, the Northern Kentucky Port Authority, Kenton County and the Catalytic Fund. The partners enlisted planning professionals from Kenton County Planning and Development Services in late June to lead a public feedback session with residents of the nearby neighborhoods. Residents at that meeting expressed an interest in several possible uses for the eight-acre site, including a community center, an open air market, affordable housing, workforce and vocational training centers and various kinds of recreation. Childcare and grocery stores were other common recommendations.
