Six Northern Kentucky high school students graduated from Western Kentucky University’s prestigious Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science last Saturday, May 9.

Situated on WKU’s main campus in Bowling Green, Kentucky, the Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science is a two-year residential program for rising juniors and seniors focused on advanced studies in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

This year, 82 students graduated from Gatton, with six hailing from Northern Kentucky:

  • Aryan Chinthala — Larry A. Ryle High School
  • Flynn William Cook — Highlands High School, Global and Service Scholar
  • Roby Liam Hardesty — Dixie Heights High School, Research Scholar
  • Eric Hebenstiel — Randall K. Cooper High School
  • Nicholas Sugimoto — Larry A. Ryle High School
  • Elaine Zeiser — Simon Kenton High School, Global Scholar

“Everyone has played a significant role in the success of The Gatton Academy,” Gatton Executive Director Dr. Julia Roberts said in a news release. “Parents and family members, you have made The Gatton Academy a reality as you have trusted Gatton’s vision and mission, as well as the staff, to be everything they said they would be.”

Gatton graduates can earn recognition as research, global and/or service scholars during their two years at Gatton:

  • Research scholars complete two research semesters, with their results presented before a professional audience after passing a vetting process.
  • Global scholars complete four semesters of STEM + Global Studies or an NSLI-Y program.
  • Service scholars must complete at least 60 hours of community service during their time at Gatton.
