Covington and Kenton County residents can celebrate Earth Day and Arbor Day, observed on April 22 and April 24, respectively, this year, by getting free seedlings at two different events on Saturday, April 25.
The first event is the University of Kentucky’s Kenton County Extension Office’s Earth Day Tree Seedling Giveaway from 9 a.m. to noon. Kenton County residents can take home up to five seedlings by showing proof of residency by visiting the Covington branch of the Kenton County Public Library‘s parking lot or the University Extension Office on Marshall Road.
The following species will be available for pick up:
- Swamp Chestnut Oak
- Black Gum
- White Pine
- Silky Dogwood
- Pecan
The second is the annual Linden Day Covington Arbor Day Celebration from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Historic Linden Grove Cemetery and Arboretum. This event will be limited to Covington residents only.
Planting and care instructions will be included with the trees. The event will also feature a ceremonial tree planting, live music and information on the importance of trees to the local environment. Recipients must show proof of Covington residency.
The following tree species will be available at the event:
- Buttonbush Â
- Black Gum Â
- Black Oak Â
- Saucer Magnolia Â
- Washington Hawthorn Â

Recipients can receive up to three seedlings. They can get a fourth seedling if they provide proof of participation in the Covington Green-Up, which is scheduled for the same day. Recipients must show a photo of the Green-Up event to get a fourth seedling.
