Campbell County got a hot start to control the game early, defeating Bishop Brossart 60-42 in the girls 37th District Championship at Campbell County Middle School.

The Lady Camels knocked down five 3-pointers in the first quarter to open a 22-14 lead and finished with 10 makes from beyond the arc, half of their points coming on threes.

Campbell County carried a 31-25 lead into halftime and continued to pull away in the third quarter, taking a 48-36 lead into the final quarter.

Coach Davey Johnson, recently named KABC 10th Region of the Year, really liked his team’s intensity on the defensive end.

“They battled. Defensivley they battled,” Johnson said. “We let Kylie (Smith) get loose early in the first quarter. She’s an unbelievable player. We did a much better job on her the next two quarters.”

Isabella Jayasuriya led the Lady Camels with 17 points and was named tournament MVP, while Kendall Augsback and Faith Whitford scored 12 each. Madeline Barbian added 10.

“If you look at our stats for the whole year, it’s usually Isabella (Jayasuria) with 15 points, but then it’s 10, nine, eight, seven, six… everybody’s right there together,” Johnson said.

Bishop Brossart was led by Smith with 13 points and Hadley Eviston with 12. The two were named to the All-Tournament team along with Augsback and Whitford.

In a bit of a change from prior years, as the district champion, Campbell County will host a first-round game in the 10th Region Tournament against the runner-up from District 38, 39 or 40.

Johnson said the game is expected to be played at the high school rather than the larger middle school gym.

The 10th Region Tournament semifinals and finals are at Harrison County.
