Bellevue 21, St. Henry 7

Dayton 42, Ludlow 39

Boyle County 21, Highlands 20

The Rebels (3-1) handed Highlands (3-1) their first loss of the season in a tight one in Danville.

Trailing 20-14, Boyle’s JiDyn Smith-Hisel scored on a two-yard rushing touchdown with 4:52 remaining for the game-winning score.

The two traded blows all contest, Highlands scoring first, but a failed two-point conversion proving to be the difference maker. Boyle County racked up 397 total yards to the Bluebirds 217. John Feldbrugge caught a touchdown, Tayden Lorenzen ran for another score and Rio Litmer’s second touchdown pass found the hands of Ian Garrahan from 26 yards out. Highlands final score came with 8:04 in the third, it was tough sledding after that as they just had two first downs the rest of the way.

Gabe Williams led Highlands rushing attack with 75 yards on 14 carries. Litmer and the Bluebirds passing game struggled, connecting on just 11-of-30 attempts for 134 yards.

Highlands looks to regroup with a home game against Ryle on Friday.

Cooper 35, Campbell County 7

The purple and gold clad dromedary’s traversed across county lines to Longbranch Road in Union to take on the Cooper Jaguars. 

Campbell County was looking to notch win number three while the Jags, buoyed by a win over crosstown Ryle was looking to build momentum heading towards district play.  Cooper took control in the first half, racing out to an 28-0 lead and cruised to a 35-7 victory.

Keagan Maher hustled like he was hauling mail and delivered 118 rushing yards and scored three touchdowns while Cam O’Hara threw for 144 yards and two touchdowns in the Jaguars second straight victory. Nick Strunk added a 28-yard pick six which afforded Cooper back-to-back weeks with defensive touchdowns.

The Camels lone score was a 47-yard run by Lucas Anthrop, finishing with 77 yards on the ground.   Cooper (2-2) hosts one of the top ranked 6A schools next week in DuPont Manual while Campbell (2-2) returns home to host Lloyd.

Covington Catholic 49, Dixie Heights 7

The blue and white Colonels jumped out to a 42-0 second quarter lead for the victory Friday night in Park Hills.

Mac Cogswell returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and CovCath (2-2) led 14-0 less than 30 seconds into the game after recovering a fumble and Dylan Gaiser scoring a play later on a five-yard rushing touchdown.

Cash Harney got CovCath into the end zone in a variety of ways as he threw for two touchdowns, ran for one and caught another. The touchdown grab was a 63-yarder from Dylan Courtney while Owen Pitzer also found paydirt. Gabe Weis and Spencer Clukey were the beneficiaries of Harney’s touchdown passes.

Dixie Heights (0-4) lone touchdown came late when Mason Fields hit Henry Waters for a 19-yard touchdown.

CovCath gets rival Beechwood next week while Dixie aims for their first win of the season at home against Henry Clay.

Conner 42, Newport Central Catholic 7

The Cougars win their first game of the season in blowout fashion over the Thoroughbreds. It also marked the first win post Dave Trosper, the longtime Cougars coach who died suddenly of a heart attack in June.

Grayson Montgomery threw five touchdown passes after throwing four last week, connecting with Shepherd Dozier three times, Abraham Koller once and Travis Keen the other. Dozier added a rushing touchdown as well as they improved to 1-3.

Dozier finished with 106 yards receiving and 15 yards rushing. Montgomery totaled 201 passing yards. The Cougars will host Simon Kenton next week.

NewCath fell to 1-3 in defeat. Things stay tough for them as they head to Raceland next week.

Bracken County 41, Bishop Brossart 13

Bracken County led 41-0 before the Mustangs were able to put their first points on the board in Alexandria at the MAC.

Brossart’s two touchdowns came late, Landon Spaulding connecting with Bently McKinzie on a touchdown pass and Spaulding running in the other score.

The Mustangs fell to 2-2 and host Nicholas County next week. Bracken County improved to 2-1.

Holy Cross 48, Holmes 0

For the second time this season, Tommy Maddox returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and the Indians won the battle of Covington at Thomas More.

Brian Ferguson threw and ran for a touchdown, Charles Oglesby, Calhil Johnson and Trevin Figgs had rushing touchdowns while Dustin Wilson recovered a fumble for a touchdown. Ferguson’s touchdown pass went to Max Hunt.

The Indians led 41-0 at halftime in this one. They’re off to a 4-0 start with a bye week ahead before they host Eminence on Sept. 26.

Holmes (0-4) also gets a bye week before they host Jackson County on Sept. 26.

Lloyd Memorial 36, Aiken (Ohio) 22

The Juggernauts are off to a 4-0 start for the second time in three seasons with a home victory over the Falcons.

After trailing 8-0, Lloyd responded with 21 unanswered and took a 21-16 lead into the half. Lincon Tomlinson added two rushing touchdowns in the second half to seal it. Kaleb Evans hit on three touchdown passes in the 21-0 run, Avery Conrad for a 57-yard touchdown, Billy Lewis on a 44-yard strike and Colten Barger for a 45-yard touchdown for their first half scoring.

Lloyd heads to Campbell County next week in their final tune-up before district play.

CAL 34, Ryle 27

Christian Academy-Louisville jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first and had a 17-7 lead by halftime.

The Raiders kept inching closer, trailing 17-14 and 27-21, but ultimately were unable to stop the Centurions passing game, CAL’s final score making it 34-21 with 3:20 to play. The Raiders answered with 1:11 left to make it 34-27, but were unable to recover the onside kick and ran out of time.

Boone County 34, Walton-Verona 26 (OT)

Walton-Verona led 13-12 at halftime and the game was tied 20-20 after three.

Both scored touchdowns in the fourth to get it to 26-26 after 48 minutes of play, the Rebels winning in overtime and getting to 3-1 for the first time since 2011.

Beechwood 45, Simon Kenton 6

The Tigers led 24-0 at halftime and scored the game’s first 31 points before the Pioneers got on the board.

They improved to 3-0 and host rival Covington Catholic next week. Simon Kenton dropped to 2-2 and plays at Conner next week.

Scott 48, Grant County 22

The Eagles (2-2) led 27-8 at half and 41-16 after three earning their second win of the season and already matching last year’s win total.

They return to action next week at home against Bourbon County.

Taylor County 30, Newport 0

The Wildcats (2-2) were held to just 117 total yards in defeat.

They’ll play at Paris next week.
