Newport has begun a pilot program for meterless parking on certain city streets.

The city will be exploring the program with Passport Parking. The app-based parking portion of the program will allow users to find, reserve and pay for parking directly from their phones, along with kiosks placed throughout the pilot program area.

According to a news release from the Newport Police Department, this approach could enhance convenience, improve parking availability and create sustainable urban planning in the business district.

The pilot program’s areas include:

  • 300, 400, and 500 blocks of Monmouth.
  • 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 blocks of Columbia.
  • 10 and 100 blocks of W 5th E 4th, E 5th and E 6th.
  • 10, 100, 200, 300 blocks of W 4th.
  • W 3rd from York to the 4th Street roundabout.
  • Riverboat Row and Festival Park.

The police department is asking for feedback from the community on the program, including how easy or difficult it was to use, whether the system was an improvement compared to traditional meters, and any challenges or suggestions.
