The Campbell County Animal Shelter held an open house last week to showcase its brand new renovations.

The additions to the shelter located at 1989 Poplar Ridge Road in Melbourne began last spring to correct the flow of the building and reduce the stress of the animals, contain any illnesses and create a better experience for adopters.

“This building was built in 1986, and back then, it was just the couple of kennels that we had and not really a nice space for cats,” Campbell County Animal Services Director Lisa Krummen said. “Over the years, we’ve had several additions built on that were just small, and they didn’t really make sense. The building layout was kind of a hodgepodge.”

Cats were previously housed in the lobby, where all the traffic occurred. The renovations include an isolation/hospital area for cats, a designated area for housing cats away from dog and foot traffic, and three private meet-and-greet rooms for dog adoption consultations.

The addition also allowed staff to reorganize the existing lobby for more efficient office space, including an office for animal control services.

The Campbell County Animal Shelter conducts animal control services for the cities of Bellevue, Cold Spring, Dayton, Fort Thomas, Highland Heights, Melbourne, Silver Grove, Southgate and Wilder.

“On behalf of everybody, your fellow county employees and administrators, I want to congratulate you for bringing this improvement to fruition,” Campbell County Judge/Executive Steve Pendery said.
