Regulations and requirements for operating a golf cart on public roads were discussed at the Union Commission meeting this Monday.
Multiple neighborhoods in Union have requested that golf carts be permitted to operate in their subdivisions. Rather than giving each subdivision individual permits, Mayor Larry Solomon said golf cart operations would be much easier to regulate by passing a blanket ordinance for the whole city.

The city will adopt Boone County’s current statute. Bill Mark, a representative from the Boone County Sheriff’s Department, presented what that will look like once implemented based on Kentucky’s golf cart regulation ordinance.
This will only apply to golf carts.
There are several restrictions and requirements before owners of golf carts can operate their golf carts on city streets, including:
- Operator’s license required.
- Must be insured.
- Mandatory inspection of vehicle by sheriff’s office.
- Must have a permit and registration sticker clearly displayed.
- May not operate on roads with speed limit over 35mph, or any state highway.
Violations could lead to a fine of up to $250 and impoundment of the vehicle.
Union City Commission will present the new ordinance at the next public meeting in August.
