For some, Labor Day includes gatherings with family and friends, cookouts and fireworks celebrations.
To that end, the Walton Fire Protection District is offering a series of fireworks safety tips for celebrants.
“We encourage everyone to have a plan and a backup plan,” Walton Fire Protection District Assistant Fire Chief/Fire Marshal Charlie Alexander said. “Consider the what ifs.”
Below are some tips the department promotes, Alexander said.
- Always have a water source (garden hose, bucket of water, etc.)
- Do not discard fireworks in a garbage can prior – allow them to soak in water and or be saturated with water and left to set a few hours spraying occasionally with water.
- Always be aware of your surroundings (buildings, trees, vehicles, audience, etc.)
- Wear eye protection.
- If an individual is intoxicated, fireworks should not be handled
- Do not attempt to reignite fireworks that misfire.
- Locate a firm, level surface for fireworks discharge.
- Do not use old, leftover fireworks, which could result in misfire or failure.
- Do not use illegal, homemade fireworks, use reputable licensed suppliers.
- Do not handle lit fireworks.
