Walton will be closing Skyway Drive as a public street to begin construction of a Catholic boys’ school.
Walton City Council approved the motion to close the street’s public right-of-way during a meeting Tuesday evening.
“By vacating this right-of-way, we relinquish the city’s ownership and maintenance responsibility,” said city attorney Michael Duncan.
The closure comes as Our Lady of the Assumption Church hopes to develop a Catholic boys’ school in the area. The 9.1 acres that the church owns, as well as Skyway Drive, was annexed into the city of Walton in December 2022.
It is unclear when the school is scheduled to be developed.
