The Boone County Fiscal Court has awarded Danville, Kentucky-based Bluegrass Recreation a contract to build the county’s first disability-accessible playground at Boone Woods Park.

“The Boone Woods playground was built in 1997,” Boone County Director of Parks David Whitehouse said. “It is showing its age, but we’ve got really good wear out of it for that time. We do not have any playgrounds under our Boone County watch that are accessible, which means that you can roll a wheelchair on them or you can get them up on to the playground themselves.”

Bids were solicited, Whitehouse said, and three were submitted, with Bluegrass Recreation being recommended – coming in at $340,840.38.

“We had three really good, competent bids, but Bluegrass actually was the one that was the most handicapped accessible from different levels, instead of just being able to go across the playing surface,” Whitehouse said.

Possessing more than 25 years of experience, Bluegrass Recreation noted it has worked with a portfolio of the top manufacturers in the playground industry, offering an array of playgrounds, aquatic solutions, sports installations, flooring and shades. The company indicated the core of its business is a commitment to customer service.

“This is a budgeted item in the current year budget,” Boone County Judge/Executive Gary W. Moore said. “And it is about $9,000 under budget.”
