A third candidate has dropped out of the field for Covington City Commission.
G. Scot Jones announced his withdrawal from the race via his campaign Facebook page on Tuesday.
“As many know, I was downsized in late 2013,” Jones said in the statement. “I’ve been looking for gainful employment as I never wanted to be a career politician. I’ve found a good job. However, my hours would prevent me from attending city meetings as well as the candidate forum.”
Jones called the remaining candidate pool “talented” and said that he would ask that his supporters pay attention and push for the things he had hoped to push for such as what he called fully staffed police and fire departments, upgraded parks, and more citizen involvement in neighborhood associations.
“I’ll be looking for the four candidates that are pushing for these items as well,” he said.
Jones’s announcement follows the earlier withdrawal of second-time candidate Greg Paeth and last week’s departure from the race by former city commissioner Jerry Bamberger.
When the field was announced in January, sixteen were running in the May 20 primary that would dwindle the candidates to eight. At this point, thirteen candidates remain for next month’s primary election. The eight candidates that advance will compete for four seats and two-year terms in November. Mayor Sherry Carran, the fifth member of the city’s governing body, is not up for election this year.
Meanwhile, Covington city commission candidates are expected to attend a meet and greet Tuesday evening at Wunderbar (1132 Lee St.) hosted by the Westside Action Coalition. The event is scheduled from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
The remaining candidates include all four incumbents, Chuck Eilerman, Steve Frank, Mildred Rains, and Michelle Williams, and challengers, Warner Allen, Christi Blair, Chas Brannen, Michael Gene Brosmore, Thomas Dorning, Jordan Huizenga, Danny Jackson, Brandon Mims, and Bill Wells.
