The Fort Mitchell Police Department said a grenade found in a mailbox that led to the evacuation of an intersection Saturday afternoon was not a working grenade and did not contain explosives.
The U.S. Postal Service called in a suspicious package around 11:30 a.m. in the mailbox outside Biggby Coffee near Orphanage Road and Dixie Highway, Fort Mitchell Police said in a Facebook post.
Police worked with the fire department to shut down any surrounding businesses and to evacuate the area.
“After various tools were used, it was discovered it was an inert grenade,” the Facebook post said. “The FBI and the Postal Inspection Service will be taking over this investigation. The roadway and all affected businesses are now open.”
Fort Mitchell Police thanked all surrounding agencies that responded to assist, including the FBI, Postal Inspection Service, Kentucky State Police and the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad.
