The use of Elementary and Secondary Emergency Relief, or ESSER, funds is on the table at the Walton-Verona Independent Schools Board of Education meeting tonight.

Since the passage of the $350 billion American Rescue Plan Act, government bodies at every level have been receiving and distributing federal funding in an attempt to lessen the residual effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

In schools, that funding comes in the form of ESSER dollars. Tonight, the Walton-Verona school board will discuss how that money can help pay for the salaries of counselors and special education instructors, according to the publicly available board agenda.

The board will review and vote on ESSER funds supporting a salary for an additional district-wide special education teacher, a high school counselor, a fourth grade teacher, a district-wide instructional coach, as well as an elementary RTI teacher.

Three non-ESSER funding items on the agenda will also deal with salaries. Those include the salary schedules for classified and certified staff, as well as the extracurricular salary schedule.

Walton-Verona Independent Schools Board of Education is scheduled to meet Thursday, April 28 at 7 p.m. Residents can view the full agenda on the district website.
