The Eleventh Street Bridge in Covington is reopened to pedestrians, the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet – District 6 Office announced Monday.
The former span, which connects two sections of 11th St. between Russell Street and Madison Avenue over CSX Railroad tracks, was demolished and a new bridge was installed.
The former bridge accommodated vehicular traffic but was closed in 2013 due to deteriorating conditions. The new span, a $777,000 project, is for pedestrians only.
Pedestrian access on the old bridge remained in tact until March of this year when work on the new span began.
The new 12-foot-wide pedestrian bridge was constructed in the same space that the previous bridges occupied.
The new span will provide a safer connection for neighborhoods, KYTC said.
