Two Beechwood Middle School students won state championship titles at the Kentucky High School Speech League (KHSSL) Jr. State Championship held online last week.Â
The 100th anniversary of the KHSSL State Speech Championship was held in an online format this year due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Students in grades 4 – 8 recorded their speeches, and then judges viewed the performances online and ranked and rated in comparison to other speakers across the state. With 30 middle schools competing, Beechwood’s team won 4th place overall, with two students winning state championships.Â
Sylvia Wessel was named the state champion in Humorous Interpretation for the second year in a row.
Louis Schlosser won the state championship in two events: Extemporaneous Speaking and Original Oratory. In addition, Louis won the prestigious Blyton Award, which is given annually to one outstanding 8th grade speech competitor from the entire state.Â
The Beechwood High School and Middle School speech teams are coached by Molly Seifert, Effie Fugate, Christy Steinbrunner, Josi Stone, and several volunteer parent coaches.Â
