Cincinnati’s favorite hippo is about to be immortalized in the form of a mural and you have the opportunity to vote on the design.
ArtWorks the Cincinnati Zoo will produce a mural this summer to honor Fiona, the premature hippopotamus that captured the nation’s heart.
There are five murals to choose from, including one from Fort Thomas native, Lucie Rice.
Rice, and illustrator and designer who was profiled on Fort Thomas Matters in 2015, describes her work as whimsical and contemporary with a little retro flair.
“It is typically pretty bright and colorful, and my signature treatment is the addition of a distressed texture to give the work a screen-printed look, very much inspired by my Nashville experience and a nod to the famous Hatch Show printing press,” Rice says. “I also love incorporating pattern and hiding tiny little details throughout.”Â

You can vote of one of these five final designs, which will then be painted by July 25 at 910 Race St.
ArtWorks is also incorporating the public by selling tickets to help paint the mural through their program called “Paint by Numbers.”
