There will be a four-way race for Covington mayor to go along with a field of 10 for city commission, meaning that if all the candidates stay in the race, there will be primaries in each.
Incumbent Mayor Sherry Carran is running for a second 4-year term and has drawn challenges from longtime state legislator Joe Meyer, and political newcomers Alfonse Mele, and Matthew Winkler.
In the May primary, two candidates will be eliminated and the top two candidates will advance to the general election in November.
On the city commission side, ten candidates have filed, and that means two will be eliminated in the May primary and that eight will advance to the general election in November where four will be elected.
There will be at least two new commissioners elected since incumbents Chuck Eilerman and Steve Frank declined to seek reelection.
Incumbents Jordan Huizenga and Bill Wells will each seek a second term and they face some familiar competition. Former commissioner Michelle Williams, who lost her reelection bid in 2014, is back on the ballot. So are Christi Blair and Brandon Mims who both ran and lost in 2014.
Longtime local government administrator Robert Horine is also seeking a seat on the city commission. He has previously served as assistant city manager in Covington and retired last year as Campbell County Administrator, a position he held for 13 years.
First time candidates Stuart Warren, Tim Downing, Clayton Shull, and John Flesch round out the list of commission candidates.\
