Looking for something to do with the family, inside, on a hot summer day? If so, KY Forward‘s “Science Guy” Jason Lindsey shows us how to use a few ingredients from around the house to create homemade ice cream.
Homemade Ice Cream
Ingredients:
- Half cup of Half & Half
- 1 tablespoon of sugar
- 1 tablespoon of vanilla
- 1 sandwich bag
- 1 gallon bag
- 3 cups of crushed ice
- Third of a cup of rock salt
Instructions:
Step 1: Place the Half & Half, sugar, and vanilla into the sandwich bag and seal it
Step 2: Place the ice and rock salt into the gallon bag, then add the sandwich bag into the gallon bag, then seal the gallon bag
Step 3: Squeeze the gallon bag until the ice cream thickens
Step 4: Remove the sandwich bag from the gallon bag, open the sandwich bag, and using a spoon, taste your homemade ice cream!
Explanation:
The salt lowers the freezing point of the ice and creates a cold brine which absorbs the hear from the bag containing the Half & Half, sugar, and vanilla. This causes the contents in the bag containing the Half & Half, sugar, and vanilla to go from a liquid to a solid, creating homemade ice cream!
