The Kentucky Cabinet for Health & Family Services may soon have a new home in Latonia for the local offices currently hosted in Downtown Covington.
City Commissioner Chuck Eilerman said at a candidates forum in Latonia on Thursday night that the state had tentatively reached a deal with a developer to lease space in what would be a newly constructed 40,000 sq. ft. building.
City Manager Larry Klein confirmed Eilerman’s comments for The River City News later Thursday night. “I’m glad the jobs are staying in Covington and in a new office building to add to the tax rolls,” Klein said. The project also means, “lots of new employees and customers from the facility for Latonia businesses.”
Though nothing is final, the building would be built on 43rd Street on the vacant land near the Walgreens.Â
Some state offices had previously been housed inside the Coppins Building with City Hall but moved out with the city in anticipation of the development of The Hotel Covington there, while other state offices have been operating inside the former Covington YMCA on Madison Avenue which is slated to become part of the Gateway Community & Technical College urban metro campus.
Eilerman said two-hundred jobs could be part of the shift to Latonia.
This story will be updated with more information as soon as it is attained.
